From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Then She Was Gone comes "her best thriller yet" (Harlan Coben, New York Times bestselling author) about a young couple's disappearance on a gorgeous summer night, and the mother who will never give up trying to find them.
On a beautiful summer night in a charming English suburb, a young woman and her boyfriend disappear after partying at the massive country estate of a new college friend. One year later, a writer moves into a cottage on the edge of the woods that border the same estate. Known locally as the Dark Place, the dense forest is the writer's favorite place for long walks and it's on one such walk that she stumbles upon a mysterious note that simply reads, "DIG HERE." Could this be a clue towards what has happened to the missing young couple? And what exactly is buried in this haunted ground? "Utterly gripping with richly drawn, hugely compelling characters, this is a first-class thriller with heart" (Lucy Foley, New York Times bestselling author) that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I’m a bit disappointed in the characters in this novel. There always seemed to be something missing & none of them were well developed. This was quite different from the other characters in her other novels that I have read. It was still a decent read but I just couldn’t really like any of the characters.
I could not put this book down!!Read into the wee hours and woke up and read all day again. My husband was thrilled when I finished it bc he felt neglected…
I enjoyed reading 3 other books by Lisa Jewell but I just couldn't keep reading this one. Flipping back and forth between years and reading repetitive things and not even 1/4 of the way through. Maybe I didn't get this enough time. But I pretty much know when a book is worth continuing, and I just couldn't keep going with this one.
This was a really solid read from Lisa Jewell—one of those books that pulls you in early and keeps you there. It centers on the disappearance of nineteen-year-old Talulah, leaving behind her baby and a mother determined to find answers. The story moves between present day and the lead-up to that night, which keeps the tension building without giving too much away. There are quite a few characters, but it works. It has a bit of an amateur, DIY detective feel, with a novelist helping Talulah’s mother—and the police—piece things together. Someone clearly wants to talk about what happened that night and begins leaving clues, tied in unsettling ways to her own detective novel series. None of the women are detectives, but working together starts to shake loose compelling clues in what had long gone cold. The tension builds steadily, and the pacing makes it all feel just a little more unsettling. The character development is strong. Even the ones you don’t like are written well enough that you stay interested in them. And because you’re not entirely sure what “it” even is at first, suspicion crops up constantly. This was a fast read for me—the kind where you lose sleep to get to the next chapter. And maybe the one after that. Definitely worth it.
This was a really well-constructed thriller. The multiple timelines were easy to follow and built tension in a way that kept me turning pages. I especially appreciated how small details early on ended up mattering later. That kind of payoff always works for me.The emotional stakes felt real, and the ending tied things together in a satisfying way without feeling over the top. One thematic thread didn’t fully land for me, but it was minor compared to how strong the overall story was.Definitely one of the better thrillers I’ve read lately.
