Oh hey, guess what? New York Times bestseller Nick Seluk has a hilarious new nonfiction picture book all about the world's biggest ecosystem -- the ocean!
Have you ever thought about everything the ocean does for you? It changes the weather, creates oxygen, provides food, and is a great place to have fun, too! So why is the ocean such a big deal? Because we couldn't live without it!
This funny and factual picture book fromΒ Heart and Brain creator Nick Seluk explains the science behind the ocean: its plant and animal life, its contribution to the world, and what we can do every day to protect it. Humans wouldn't be able to survive without a healthy ocean. That's kind of a big deal.
Each spread features bite-sized text and comic-style art with sidebars sprinkled throughout. Anthropomorphized marine animals help readers learn through funny jokes and comic panels. Funny, smart, and accessible,Β The Ocean Is Kind of a Big Deal is a must-have!

The illustrations are perfect and I love the writing! Such a great book for kids learning about the ocean and ocean life. I got this for our 2 year old and of course it's far above her level now, but she likes looking at the illustrations and we can talk about things on every page. I think it'll be a favorite when she's older.
This book is amazing. Tons of information but written in such a fun way that my ocean obsessed kiddo canβt put it down!
We bought this for my 4yo because she has enjoyed similar science-in-a-cartoon-format books in the past. Some of the content was slightly more advanced, but she enjoyed it and thought the characters were hilarious! It's very informative, talks about the importance of protecting and preserving our oceans (but ends on a hopeful note for future generations), and has fun activities, such as matching different creatures to the zone of the oceans that they live in.It is definitely more focused on human interaction with the oceans, so if you're looking for an in-depth look at various sea creatures and animals, you might be better suited with something else, but overall it's a great read and I'm definitely going to search out other books in this series!
I bought this because hubby and I are big fans of The Awkward Yeti, and we are so glad we got it! It is definitely geared toward elementary-aged kids but we still had a blast reading it to our baby, and we even learned some things! The artwork is fun and engaging, the writing is easy to understand but still informative, and it's got some funny jokes and comics throughout. I would definitely recommend this as a gift for a 3rd-5th grade child, though I'm really glad we got it for our baby's library!
