The final book in Ursula K. Le Guin's must-read Books of Earthsea.
The sorcerer Alder fears sleep. The dead are pulling him to them at night. Through him they may free themselves and invade Earthsea.
Alder seeks advice from Ged, once Archmage. Ged tells him to go to Tenar, Tehanu, and the young king at Havnor. They are joined by amber-eyed Irian, a fierce dragon able to assume the shape of a woman. The threat can be confronted only in the Immanent Grove on Roke, the holiest place in the world, and there the king, hero, sage, wizard, and dragon make a last stand.
In this final book of the Books of Earthsea, Le Guin combines her magical fantasy with a profoundly human, earthly, humble touch.
With stories as perennial and universally beloved as The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of The Rings--but also unlike anything but themselves--Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea novels are some of the most acclaimed and awarded works in literature. They have received accolades such as the National Book Award, a Newbery Honor, the Nebula Award, and many more honors, commemorating their enduring place in the hearts and minds of readers and the literary world alike.
Join the millions of fantasy readers who have explored these lands. As The Guardian put it: "Ursula Le Guin's world of Earthsea is a tangled skein of tiny islands cast on a vast sea. The islands' names pull at my heart like no others: Roke, Perilane, Osskil . . ."

I enjoyed the author comments when she said that if you read fantasy you’ll read fantasy no matter the age of the central character and you’ll follow them through the life of the story. I loved watching as Ged and the others grew and adventured through the story. This may be teen fiction but it’s truly a story for any age reader that loves a great fantasy story.
I enjoyed the original trilogy of Earthsea books, and The Farthest Shore was one of my favorite books of all time (I loved the bond between Ged and Arren). I was incredibly disappointed with the previous two books, Tehanu and Tales, and what they did to the characters I loved so much. Not to mention the lack of plot in the previous two books, as they were mostly about tearing down the existing characters and lore in order to set up this book. This book is SOMEWHAT better than the previous two because it actually has a plot again. And the lore to this specific book IS interesting. I just wish it had been done differently, NOT at the cost of beloved characters and their legacies. While the new characters felt incredibly shallow to me, the old characters continue to be destroyed. This particular book did what I feared the most: it ruined Lebannen, my favorite character. He's a "great king" or so the book tells us, but the book SHOWS us that he taxes his people to death so he can build pretty palaces, he throws temper tantrums like a child even though he's a 30-year-old man, and apparently he's a huge womanizer and everyone knows it. And he does nothing useful in this book to redeem himself from these new revelations.I regret reading all three of these books. I don't recommend them if you enjoyed the original trilogy and original characters. I will be donating these ones to a thrift store and keeping only the originals. Huge miss for me!

A fitting masterwork from Earthsea's creator concludes her tapestry of lives well lived and of life well ended ... or perhaps only passes her staff on to others who will follow the dragons into the west beyond the west and return with more true names for our darkest fears.
I LOVE these stories, bound together of wisdom, light, earth & word. Le Guin is herself a sorceress - a Mender of the world. The bringer of wholeness and repair. This set of novels are a gift the culminate in an actualization of the myth of Tikkun Olam. What a pleasure it is to follow the rarity of a spoken woman’s wisdom into the profound depths of this endless story.
