A New York Times Bestseller
A New York Times and NPR Best Book of the Year
"This hushed suspense tale about thwarted dreams of escape may be her best one yet...its own kind of masterpiece." --Maureen Corrigan,Β The Washington Post
A "taut, chiseled and propulsive" (Vogue) novel from the author of the forthcoming novel The Hunter and the bestselling mystery writer who "is in a class by herself." (The New York Times)
Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a bucolic Irish village would be the perfect escape. After twenty-five years in the Chicago police force and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens. But when a local kid whose brother has gone missing arm-twists him into investigating, Cal uncovers layers of darkness beneath his picturesque retreat, and starts to realize that even small towns shelter dangerous secrets.
"One of the greatest crime novelists writing today"Β (Vox) weaves a masterful, atmospheric tale of suspense, asking what we sacrifice in our search for truth and justice, and what we risk if we don't.

I love Tana French , one of the best book and the Hunter too , i really got those characters in my head for a long time .
Just okay. Very slow. I would describe it as a slow burn story. I wouldnβt seek out any other books from this author after reading this.
Quieter story but still Frenchβs masterful technique of putting the reader in the place with the characters. Every time I finish one of her books, I feel I know the characters well!
I really enjoyed this book. It was a great story, told by a great narrator.Very well written, you can actually feel the air and see the landscape.I donβt really care for long reviews. But trust me this book is well worth reading and it is a good mystery. Great characters. I already bought the sequels. I do the talk to text/immersion reading. Itβs almost like watching a movie for me.
I avoided this book for a while because some reviews called in dark. Atmospheric is a better description. Evocative descriptions of Ireland with wonderful characters and a compelling mystery. I loved it and Iβm looking forward to the next book in the series.
