#1 New York Times Bestseller

"A mystery, a thriller, a ghost story, and a literary tour de force . . . an authentic epic, long and lush, full of back story and observed detail . . . the author exercises a certain magic that catches and holds our attention, a magic that is undeniably his own."--Los Angeles Times Book Review

Born mute, speaking only in sign, Edgar Sawtelle leads an idyllic life on his family's farm in remote northern Wisconsin, where they raise and train an extraordinary breed of dog. But when tragedy mysteriously strikes, Edgar is forced to flee into the vast neighboring wilderness, accompanied by three yearling dogs. He comes of age in the wild, struggling for survival, until the day Edgar is forced to choose between leaving forever and returning home to learn the truth behind what has happened.

Filled with breathtaking scenes--the elemental north woods, the sweep of seasons, an iconic American barn, a fateful vision rendered in the falling rain--The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is a meditation on the limits of language and what lies beyond, a brilliantly inventive retelling of an ancient story, and an epic tale of devotion, betrayal, and courage in the American heartland.

Read this!

This is one of the most fascinating books I ever read. It’s about dogs, family, countryside, but it’s so much more. It has a mystical quality to it… Enjoy!!

Beautiful Prose

The story, so unique, is a beautiful study of relationships. I feel stunned by this breathtaking work of prose, combined at once with a heart wrenching love story.

A magnificent tale!

I truly loved this novel and was so sad to see the end coming. Beautiful writing that twists at your heart. This is a wonderful story of a family and their unique relationships with the special dogs they raise and train. Never a dull moment throughout. I picked it up whenever I had a few extra minutes to read (and that minute turned into many moments!). Definitely a book I would highly recommend.

Having trouble making it through.

I'm reading this on Kindle and I keep thinking it will be done soon...but I'm only 60 percent through. Kindle is very linear. You don't know how much is left, and you can rarely go back. Therefore I prefer prose that is crisp and straightforward. Don't give me any of that lyrical poetry where I'm not sure what's happening. Is it a hallucination? A faulty memory? The book is way too long winded. Enough about the barn and the trees and the tractor and especially the endless details of dog training. It is disturbing that these dogs seem to be a "product". Where is the love, the emotional bond with these special creatures? What an opportunity the author missed.I'm not sure I feel like finishing this book. Especially since reviewers are saying it never really resolves.
