Winner of the 2020 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award
The Newbery Award-winning author of THE CROSSOVER pens an ode to black American triumph and tribulation, with art from a two-time Caldecott Honoree.
Originally performed for ESPN's The Undefeated, this poem is a love letter to black life in the United States. It highlights the unspeakable trauma of slavery, the faith and fire of the civil rights movement, and the grit, passion, and perseverance of some of the world's greatest heroes. The text is also peppered with references to the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, and others, offering deeper insights into the accomplishments of the past, while bringing stark attention to the endurance and spirit of those surviving and thriving in the present. Robust back matter at the end provides valuable historical context and additional detail for those wishing to learn more.

Very good book, I enjoyed reading the accomplishments of black and brown culture.
Looked the illustrations & writing! A great addition to our collection of Caldecott winning books! Will enjoy it for years to come!
I am not really a fan of Mr. Alexander. I have reviewed other books of his. And his age group is a lower grade with this book than what I aspire to. This is a picture book. But it's not bad. I was pleasantly surprised. The illustrator is very good.
Explained how African Americans overcame obstacles to accomplishing their goals.
I love this book. The writing and illustrations are phenomenal. I really appreciate the further mini-bios and event explanations in the back of the book. I read this to my high school literacy classes and most of them seemed to enjoy it (I mean, they are high school students - some will complain just for spite). Lots of teachable moments while reading.
