"An atmospheric chiller with shocking twists." --Shari Lapena, New York Times bestselling author of The Couple Next Door
Detective Elin Warner unravels the mystery behind the disappearance of a young woman in a propulsive new thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Sanatorium
Since the dark events that scarred her childhood, Kier Templer escaped her hometown to live life on the road. She and her twin have never lost contact until, on a trip to a Portuguese national park, Kier vanishes without a trace.
Detective Elin Warner arrives in the same park ready to immerse herself in its vast wilderness - only to hear about Kier's disappearance, and discover a disturbing map she left behind. The few strangers at an isolated campsite close ranks against Elin's questions, and the park's wild beauty starts to turn sinister.
Elin must untangle the clues to find out what really happened to Kier. But when you follow a trail, you have to be careful to watch your back...
Sarah Pearse brilliantly introduced readers to Elin Warner in The Sanatorium, with her exploits continuing in The Retreat; here, the series concludes with The Wilds, where the unanswered questions plaguing Elin are finally resolved.

After finishing book 1, The Sanatorium, I had no intention of reading book 2. Someone gave it to me after they’d finished & told me it was better than the 1st. It sat on the shelf for about a year before one day without power or internet to download a new book or watch a show, I decided to give it a go. I ended up really enjoying The Retreat. The Wilds has been my favorite out of the trilogy. Maybe because I’m now so invested in Elin. Maybe because it tied things up that were on going since book 1. Or maybe just because it was great!
This was an enjoyable read with lots of twists and turns but kept circling back to the main story. The number of players made it more readable and how the author delved into their minds and thought processes was amazing. Along with actual body and facial expressions, it was easy to conjure up visions of what they went through emotionally and mentally. Bravo!!
This 3rd novel in the Detective Elin Warner series was good. I liked the 2 perspectives, one in first person and one in third person. I felt closer to Keir than I did to Elin, but they were both going through similar emotional trauma. The story does quite a few flip flops, each one quite surprising. Psychological and physical abuse, obfuscation on a giant scale, murder, of course. This is a pretty good series.
Engaging throughout, amazing character development! I regret not starting with the first book in this series; however, this can be read as a standalone novel.
This book was good, but it felt like the plot was slow and all over the place. I enjoyed the last third of the book the most, which is when it felt like the plot picked up more.
