A #1 bestseller on The New York Times, USA Today, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times!
From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah's The Women―at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.
As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is over-whelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war, she meets―and becomes one of―the lucky, the brave, the broken, and the lost.
But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam.
The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.

I have been a nurse for 33 years, I have great respect for these nurses. Many nights in an ICU when there are just too many admissions to keep up, I have often used the term "Incoming" referencing what these women experienced. Maybe I was doing them a disservice, but it is also out of respect for what we nurses do on the front line everyday and we are never recognized for our efforts. In the book it was the Government and Vietnam War that caused such harm to these Veterans of War, now it is Corporate America making profits off of our labors. Burying the truth of what really happens in hospitals, this book sheds light on what these doctors and nurses experienced. I pray for them, their families and the nurses still out there keeping the healthcare system together. We are Heroes!!!
I have always chosen other genres of books figuring I never enjoyed history why would I enjoy an historical book, this book captured me don the very beginning and now I want to learn more about the war and those who made the ultimate sacrifice
Really related to everything in the novel, same age as main character, similar circumstances, my husband served in Vietnam during Tet offensive and had terrible experience on return to USThe whole story just moved me, especially about the women serving. Loved it
I'm a Navy/Vietnam/Agent Orange Vet. Frankie's "welcome home" was a lot like mine, including being told that the Navy wasn't in the war. This was one of the (very) few stories I've read about the war that I believed in. Thank you Ms. Hannah.
The Women is about a young nurse going to Vietnam. Her life while there and the struggles she faces when she comes home. Reading about her journey and how she and all the Vietnam vets were treated. The book is so good from the first page to the last. It is worth reading. Another Kristin Hannah book that she did an awesome job writing.
