THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING PHENONEMON
A Katie Couric Book Club Pick - A Jen Hatmaker Book Club Pick
"[A] word-of-mouth smash hit." --The New York Times
"A treasure." --Hoda Kotb
One spring morning, a stranger named Theo arrives in the small Southern city of Golden. He doesn't explain much about where he came from or why he's there--but when he visits the local coffeehouse, where pencil portraits of the people of Golden hang on the walls, he begins purchasing them, one at a time, and giving each portrait to the person depicted. In exchange, he asks only for the person's story. And so portrait by portrait, person by person, secrets are revealed, regrets are shared, and ordinary lives are profoundly altered.
A story of giving and receiving, of seeing and being seen, Theo of Golden is an unforgettable novel about the power of generosity, the importance of connection, and the quiet miracles that happen when we choose kindness and wonder.

An interesting way to begin a review, but this story is one of the promise of Eternal Life. Theo comes to Golden, Georgia a stranger. He knows nobody and is a complete unknown to this southern community. The first thing he does is explore Broadway, the main drag of the city. And his first stop is a coffee shop called The Chalice. The coffee, to Theo's discriminating taste, is superb, and as he looks around the cafe, he notices that the walls are covered with pencil portraits of different people. He finds out that a local artist draws local people from snapshots he has received or taken himself. It doesn't seem that anyone buys these remarkable portraits, so Theo decides to buy them gradually and gives them to the people in the portraits. I won't go into detail how this happens, but through these endowments, Theo becomes a much loved character in the town of Golden. My biggest impression of this story is that Theo is portrayed as a good Christian man, and with everything he does, he shows faith, hope, and love. And as an old man, he looks forward to going to heaven - an end with a future.I will cherish this story, and hope that others that need inspiration and guidance will pick it up and give it a read. You won't be sorry.
This is the best novel I have read in ages. The characters are wonderfully presented, the description is meticulous, and the story is gripping. Before reading, I had no idea it would include so much information about topics. I love: art, music, and the geography of Portugal. Along with the challenge to examine the human spirit, we are taken to a trip along the Durow river in Portugal, where crêpes and olives are grown on the hillside banks, and the famous port wine is stored in barrels in the town of Porto, where the melancholy fado music can be heard. Mainly sat in the small town of Golden, Georgia, a gentleman known only as Theo appears on the scene, surrounded by mystery. He becomes fascinated by a series of portraits drawn by a local artist, hanging in a coffee shop and his interest in purchasing them and bestowing them upon their owners begins the mystery tour. His age, 85, and his presumed wealth add to the mystery along with his evasive answers when he is questioned about his past. The people he encounters through his bestowals of the portraits are fascinating in themselves, and the way in which it is handled stirs the reader's imagination. All questions are answered by the end of the book in a clear and concise manner. This is an imaginative and unique story, believable, and exemplifying middle America very well.
This book is a must read for those that love a good feel good book! It will remind you of all of the good things people can do to bring a little hope to others when needed most. The author does a great job with keeping your interest. I almost always read the ending to the book about two thirds of the way through. This book was so good that I did not do that. I am so glad that I didn’t read the ending until the appropriate time. It ended perfectly. I am looking forward to reading another book by Mr. Levi.
I both read the book and listened to the audio version. I thought the book was one of the best I have ever read and the audio version was masterfully done.By the end I was so emotionally involved. Wonderful story and very well written.
I loved this book. Theo is the kind is person I aspire to be. The characters are well portrayed and very believable. I felt I could walk down the promenade and talk to any of them. The ending was a real surprise and I’m not going to spoil it. Let’s just say your heart will break and then be put back together again in a splendid fashion. This is a book I’ll read again and always cherish.
