A great new beach read from the New York Times bestselling author of The Bookstore on The Beach

A summer by the ocean promises new beginnings
--until old secrets resurface.

Ismay Chalmers is ready for a relaxing summer reconnecting with her fiancé at his family's luxurious beachfront cottage. But before Remy can join her, a hurricane bears down on Mariners Island. Alone in the large house, Ismay makes a disturbing discovery in Remy's childhood closet. She's not sure what to make of it, but is relieved when the property's caretaker, Bo, checks in on her.

Bo's home is damaged, so they temporarily shelter together, and Ismay is comforted by his quiet strength. But the unannounced arrival of a family member puts Bo back at his place and changes Ismay's summer into something other than what she wants--or ever expected. With so many reasons to feel unsettled, Ismay finds herself turning to Bo, who gives her more than a sense of security; there's something about him that makes her feel alive, stirring her to wonder what life might be like if she chose a different path...

As Ismay grows closer to Bo, she begins to hope the reclusive caretaker might eventually let down his guard. But when she finds out that he has secrets, too, she begins to question how well she knows any of the men in her life--and how well she can trust her own heart.

Enjoyed

Even though the plot is predictable it is well written and keeps your attention as all the details come together. A light and easy read that is good and enjoyable . Would recommend.

Excellent read

This novel was an excellent read from the get-go. Brenda Novak is a new author for me, I will definitely look for more of her works.

Unrealistic Heroine

Story plot was good but the heroine was ridiculous. Couldn’t make up her mind about a cheating, narcissistic fiancé who treated her poorly and her an educated woman. Very frustrating read as not a believable character.

Worth the read

I enjoyed the storyline. However, two things stood out to me. You simply don't "hook up" a whole house generator. They have to be plumbed for gas by a professional plumber. They often require an upgraded gas meter which would be installed by the local authorities. Again this would require a professional. Generators also require electricity while they are on standby mode. The second is it was hard to believe you would have WiFi during a storm. Having electricity via the generator does NOT give you WiFi. You need the cell towers up and working. If we could get WiFi with electricity alone, wouldn't we all plug in our routers and get WiFi and not pay an internet bill? I know, picky, but I do like reality.

A terrific Novak read!

The thing I like about Brenda Novak’s books, is that although she makes her heroines vulnerable, they also have strengths so that you know that they don’t need the hero to save them but they welcome their support. Ismay came to Mariner’s Island for rest and relaxation after finishing law school and passing the bar. She is staying at her fiancée’s parent’s vacation home while her boyfriend stays back in California to study for his exams to become a medical doctor. The first night a hurricane like storm occurs and she is without power. The family’s caretaker comes by to start the generator, but then his small cottage has a tree fall on it and Ismay offers Bo shelter during the stormLots more happens, when first her fiancée’s creepy brother arrives unannounced and then she invites her brother who is going through a divorce to join her. There is lots of drama, romance and suspense and as usual Novak ties it all together in a very satisfying way.I’ve heard some complaints from readers who were disappointed by the ending but I think they may be so used to the damsel in distress gets her revenge in the most dramatic way possible scenario. I liked the more realistic ending for everyone.
