An Apple Books Best Debut of 2024
An overwhelmed new mother becomes obsessed with the unsolved disappearance of a young girl from her small Texas hometown--and unearths her own family's dark secret.
It's 2011 and the decades-old case of Deecie Jeffries's disappearance in Austin, Texas, is still cold. New mom Bee, struggling with postpartum depression, is living in Portland, Maine, having left Austin--and those memories--far behind. Until Leo, her childhood crush and her estranged twin Gus's best friend, suddenly resurfaces, drawing Bee back into their shared past.
Bee's predictable life is upended, pushing her to return to her childhood home and piece together a neighborhood's shattered history. She becomes consumed with a need to uncover the truth about Deecie's disappearance and what happened to the families who lived across the field from one another--Gus, Leo, and their mothers: Mary, a homemaker, whose only escape is the local community theater, and Diana, a serious academic dedicated to her studies.
Told from multiple perspectives and timelines, The Undercurrent is a gripping portrait of motherhood, broken family bonds, and buried secrets.

I often fell plot driven books lack robust character development and also that the prose suffers in the backseat. This book broke down all those suppositions. The plot is compelling, The characters are complex, twisted, whimsical, fascinating people. The writing is strong and lovely. I find it difficult to recommend books to people I don't know well, because taste is so very objective. I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone. This makes it a great gift for both avid and casual readers, and a top notch book club selection.
A Zibby Book Club selection which included a Zoom call with the author. Compelling mystery, family dynamics, and motherly misgivings keep the reader invested in discovering the conclusion.
Itβs almost impossible to believe that this is the authorβs first book. Brilliantly written. Gripping plot. I hated to get to the end and lose my connection to the characters.
My favorite book this year. It's a small book that slowly draws you in and then drags you under. At the surface is the obvious mystery but the real mystery, and the truth, is buried underneath. As a mother whose children are grown the voices of the three mothers in the book rang very true. I'm not sure I would have felt that way when I was younger and hadn't experienced the humbling experience of watching my children become teens and their own individuals. Well drawn characters who are both deeply flawed and good in their own measure. I've read many books this year that were well written but had crappy endings. This one was both true, unexpected and somehow satisfying.
Such a great read for the mystery lover
