"As a young, queer couple who flip houses, Charlie and Eve can't believe the killer deal they've just gotten on an old house in a picturesque neighborhood. As they're working in the house one day, there's a knock on the door. A man stands there with his family, claiming to have lived there years before and asking if it would be alright if he showed his kids around. People pleaser to a fault, Eve lets them in. As soon as the strangers enter their home, uncanny and inexplicable things start happening, including the family's youngest child going missing and a ghostly presence materializing in the basement. Even more weird, the family can't seem to take the hint that their visit should be over. And when Charlie suddenly vanishes, Eve slowly loses her grip on reality. Something is terribly wrong with the house and with the visiting family--or is Eve just imagining things?"--

Review

This book is terrifying. I couldn't put it down. I wish there had been more information about the history of the haunting and mysterious figures in the woods. I hope there's a movie in the future. Read this novel during the daylight hours.

first horror to actually creep me out

This book was so captivating. I’ve been looking for a horror for YEARS that would actually get to me and boy this one delivered. Would recommend if you like fun new takes on the haunted house trope and being sucked in by a (?) unreliable narrator???? (You’ll understand the question marks when you read it. Just wow)

Nope!

This had the premise for what could have been a good book. But the story was difficult to follow and the writing was choppy. Surprisingly, I kept reading, hoping it would get better. It just became more confusing. The unsatisfying ending didn’t help, leaving me with unanswered questions. I think the only reason I didn’t DNF it was because it was a short read.

It's meant to be paired with hours or spiraling down reddit theories on it. It's meant to be paired with typing in morse code into google just to figure out what some of these documents are telling us. Put in the work and you'll add in that fifth star imo (:

Truly did not want to put this book down

Marcus Kliewer somehow created genuine suspense, tension and skin crawling moments with the way he writes. It was so captivating, I simply didn’t want to put it down. If I didn’t have to work, this book would’ve been an easy single day read. Highly recommend!
