NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK - "This book is every suspense lover's dream and it kept me up way too late turning pages. . . . A novel with crazy twists and turns that will have you ditching your Friday night plans for more chapters."--Reese Witherspoon

A backpacking trip has deadly consequences in this "eerie psychological thriller . . . with alluring locales, Hitchcockian tension, and possibly the best pair of female leads since Thelma and Louise" (BookPage), from the bestselling author of The Lost Night and The Herd.

A Marie Claire Book Club Pick - Named One of the Best Books of the Year by NPR and Marie Claire

Emily is having the time of her life--she's in the mountains of Chile with her best friend, Kristen, on their annual reunion trip, and the women are feeling closer than ever. But on the last night of the trip, Emily enters their hotel suite to find blood and broken glass on the floor. Kristen says the cute backpacker she brought back to their room attacked her, and she had no choice but to kill him in self-defense. Even more shocking: The scene is horrifyingly similar to last year's trip, when another backpacker wound up dead. Emily can't believe it's happened again--can lightning really strike twice?

Back home in Wisconsin, Emily struggles to bury her trauma, diving headfirst into a new relationship and throwing herself into work. But when Kristen shows up for a surprise visit, Emily is forced to confront their violent past. The more Kristen tries to keep Emily close, the more Emily questions her motives. As Emily feels the walls closing in on their cover-ups, she must reckon with the truth about her closest friend. Can Emily outrun the secrets she shares with Kristen, or will they destroy her relationship, her freedom--even her life?

Good read

First time reading Andrea Bartz work and I thought it was good. Twist after twist. Overall good book. Some things I thought were drawn out but it kept me on my toes thinking what now!?! I would be interested to read more by her that’s for sure. I would recommend this book if you like psychological thrillers

Great psychological mind bending read!

This book drew me in from the start. The character development was excellent and although there were a lot of repetitive parts in the book, some of it was necessary for plot development and other times I felt I could gloss over it and move ahead. I am a Psych major with a Psych degree and this book did a great job delving into relationships and how people develop into who they are from birth to adulthood …what is innate and what is learned behavior. And how we can sometimes think we really know and love some people only to find out they are not who they truly are…and in this case the outcome is devastating, This book has many twists and turns and I was engaged in the story from start to finish. The book gets in your head and stays with you even after you have finished it! It’s a great read! I highly recommend it!

Reader
Too long

The premise was far fetched and a little unbelievable. Would you really travel to remote areas with someone who had murdered on the last trip? And the author could have cut at least 150 pages of meandering thoughts. I skimmed the last 200 pages

this was an incredible read!

Friendship, trauma, murder, new love… what more could you ask for! This is a must read psych thriller that we didn’t know we needed. Toxic friendship at its best. Secrets… whew! 10/10 recommend.

A good thriller.

Reese’s book club picks can be hit or miss for me but this one is a hit. In this not too over the top thriller you know where the plot is going, or at least an inkling, and you are waiting for the characters to catch up. Enjoyed this book.
