From Colleen Hoover, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Regretting You, It Starts with Us, and It Ends with Us, comes a moving and haunting novel of family, love, and the power of the truth.
Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing it deserves is forgiveness.
The Voss family is anything but normal. They live in a repurposed church, newly baptized Dollar Voss. The once cancer-stricken mother lives in the basement, the father is married to the mother’s former nurse, the little half-brother isn’t allowed to do or eat anything fun, and the eldest siblings are irritatingly perfect. Then, there’s Merit.
Merit Voss collects trophies she hasn’t earned and secrets her family forces her to keep. While browsing the local antiques shop for her next trophy, she finds Sagan. His wit and unapologetic idealism disarm and spark renewed life into her—until she discovers that he’s completely unavailable. Merit retreats deeper into herself, watching her family from the sidelines, when she learns a secret that no trophy in the world can fix.
Fed up with the lies, Merit decides to shatter the happy family illusion that she’s never been a part of before leaving them behind for good. When her escape plan fails, Merit is forced to deal with the staggering consequences of telling the truth and losing the one boy she loves.
Poignant and powerful, Without Merit explores the layers of lies that tie a family together and the power of love and truth.

It’s a good read and it made me smile and laugh and cry, not so much a twist type of read but worth every second just the same!
The book was okay. It was getting to the point I was skipping parts because it seems to drag. I didn't like the main character Merit. The book just wasn't one I like. A Hoover fan still
Without Merit is unlike any book I’ve read. Colleen Hoover dives deep into the complexities of mental health, family dysfunction, and self-worth with honesty and heart. Merit is a unique and compelling character, flawed, relatable, and impossible not to root for. The story unfolds in unexpected ways, tackling tough topics with sensitivity and insight. It’s emotional, a little quirky, and ultimately hopeful. If you’re looking for a contemporary novel that goes beyond romance and digs into real-life issues, this one’s worth every page.
At first I was confused and wasn't sure i was liking this book. I stuck with it and it turned into poignant, thoughtful, quirky and very heartfelt. I'm so glad I stuck with it as it turned into a book I couldn't put down.
Without Merit stands out as one of Colleen Hoover’s most thought-provoking novels. It dives deep into family dynamics, mental health, and the weight of unspoken truths — all told through the voice of a character who is quirky, flawed, and completely unforgettable. Merit’s journey is messy and real, and I appreciated how the story tackled difficult topics with both compassion and honesty. The humor, the twists, and the emotional punches all come together beautifully. It’s a different kind of Hoover book, but one that really resonated with me. A must-read if you enjoy stories that go beyond romance and explore the complexity of being human.
