TIMES 2020 100 Best YA of All Times
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian meets Jane the Virgin in this poignant but often laugh-out-loud funny contemporary YA about losing a sister and finding yourself amid the pressures, expectations, and stereotypes of growing up in a Mexican American home.
Perfect Mexican daughters do not go away to college. And they do not move out of their parents' house after high school graduation. Perfect Mexican daughters never abandon their family.
But Julia is not your perfect Mexican daughter. That was Olga's role.
Then a tragic accident on the busiest street in Chicago leaves Olga dead and Julia left behind to reassemble the shattered pieces of her family. And no one seems to acknowledge that Julia is broken, too. Instead, her mother seems to channel her grief into pointing out every possible way Julia has failed.
But it's not long before Julia discovers that Olga might not have been as perfect as everyone thought. With the help of her best friend, Lorena, and her first love (first everything), Connor, Julia is determined to find out. Was Olga really what she seemed? Or was there more to her sister's story? And either way, how can Julia even attempt to live up to a seemingly impossible ideal?

I really liked this book a lot. Not only was it a great story about a really interesting family dynamic and how often times those that pass away are put on a pedestal (even when they may not deserve it, and then how that affects the ones that are still here), but I also read the Spanish version of the book and used it to practice my Spanish. Obviously, there were some words and phrases I needed to look up, but it was a good, intermediate level for me, and I not only enjoyed the story, but was able to improve my Spanish.
I definitely recommend this one.
I loved this book so much. Finishing the book, I understand how Julia felt at the end. I feel like she felt, closing a chapter in her life (a book in mine). Simultaneously grieving the end of something while wanting nothing more from it. It’s really, really good.
Me encanto el libro. Realmente cuenta en detalle la diferencia de las generaciones y sobre todo la importancia del amor de familia.
I got it for my 12 year old but I read it myself first, I don't think it's appropriate for under 16. But overall it's a great book. I liked it
I enjoyed the book overall. I felt it was a bit slow at the beginning, but I think it was to get to really know the main character. I wanted to brush up on my Spanish and this really helped. Good experience
